Dear HeartStrong Friends, Our 46th Outreach & Education trip continues HeartStrong's increase in its outreach and education efforts. It's a particularly difficult time to do it, but we believe if we don't increase the efforts we are already making, more students will fall victim to the horrific messages of hate and self-denial being taught in their religious school. I've written before about how HeartStrong has lost 60% of its monthly donors since 2009 due to the bad economy and our HeartStrong Friends losing their employment. We have not recovered that 60% but we have faith that those who know about the life-saving work of HeartStrong will step forward and support the social justice work of the only organization in the world with the sole mission of providing hope and help to GLBT students at religious educational institutions. Imagine for a moment what it feels like to live in a home, go to a church and be sent to a religious school where life-taking statements like this are made ALL the time and the media doesn't even talk about it. Imagine for a moment being a teenager whose parents send her to a religious high school where she is taught to hate the feelings she has for herself and other girls. Imagine what it feels like to be forced to sit in student assemblies where school leadership discuss the biblical punishment for homosexuality as death. Many, many students don't have to 'imagine' what this feels like. It is their everyday life. It's hard to get out of bed, let alone find it within themselves to push away the consistent anti-GLBT messages. This is why I founded HeartStrong nearly 15 years ago. And this is why HeartStrong needs your help. HeartStrong has already helped many find peace and self-acceptance. I hope that you will help HeartStrong so that we can help even more.
