(Malibu, California) Pepperdine University has refused to
recognize a
campus LGBT student group.
"Students Against Homophobia is not supportive of the
University's
traditional Christian teachings regarding homosexuality," said a statement
today from the administration.
SAH was founded, personally, in 2003 by Pepperdine
sophomore, Grant Turck
who sought to use the organization as a vehicle to educate students at
Pepperdine University and eventually other schools about homophobia and its
negative effects on both a community and its members. The organization has
received endorsements from PFLAG-LA and State Senator Sheila Kuehl.
"The University's decision will adversely affect the
quality of student life
on campus for some students," said Turck. "It sends a clear message of
ignorance to both the student body and those outside the University."
As a non-recognized student organization, SAH, will not
be allowed to hold
any meetings on campus and is not allowed to advertise in any way on
University property.
Pepperdine was established in 1937 by George Pepperdine,
a Christian
businessman, who stressed the desirability of "a complete education built on
a Christian value system." The institution is affiliated with the Churches
of Christ.
