If only families, friends and colleagues
truly understood the process when a
loved one comes out, we could save
years of pain and regret.
Reactions matter. Recent research has found that the
impact of disclosure reactions, or the initial response
of the recipient to the coming out message, has a
significant impact on youth.
In particular, rejecting reactions are associated with
subsequent alcohol, cigarette and marijuana use.
Furthermore, the number and quality of such
interactions over time can also provide an
understanding of future success. This is an important
lesson for all involved with GLBTQ persons.
HeartStrong's goal is to create safe and supportive disclosure reactions. As it shifts the focus to the GLBTQ person coming out, instead of our responses to the phenomenon, it reminds us of who is truly vulnerable. If you are unsure about this idea or feel that you need more time, HeartStrong can help. Understanding the motivations that drive individuals and families can help us envision a world in which we are all honest. Read this website with an open mind and open heart. You have the opportunity to support and advocate for someone who needs you, whether a student, family member, neighbor or friend. Don’t miss that chance.
